tA long continuous braid suspends from the wall, greatly magnified in scale. Over time, several hand drawn braids on tracing paper will be layered on top of or alongside this first drawing. Much like our own strands of DNA, each drawing follows the same pattern and manifests uniquely through changes that happen as part of the drawing process.
The braid motif recalls traditions such as weaving, rope making, and braiding hair, creating a common thread across various cultures and time periods. Hair inherently carries a history and physically materializes the passing of time. When hair is cut away, it often regenerates, perhaps differently than before. This braid is absent of a person, bringing narratives in Greek mythology to mind in which the passage to death is through cutting hair, as if it is the last tie to life.
