At first, this foldout book shows a single hot air balloon; but the narrative actually begins when one pulls the book open and one balloon multiplies into two, then four, and eventually several hot air balloons are lowering themselves together. These symmetrical, silhouetted balloons look at once like a diagram of mitosis or an inkblot test, unfolding and multiplying into a magical scene. The balloons are complicated structures that are meant to stay afloat but here they are making their way down. The gas is expiring and the hot air must return to cold to rest. The descent is calm and meditative, marking the beauty and simplicity of the evolution that has happened and the return to homeostasis.
